PROJECT:
HOUSING ACCESS & BENEFITS IN TRANSFORMATIVE SPACES
2025-2029 | Funded by Department of Justice Canada
The Housing Access & Benefits in Transformative Spaces (HABITS) project will focus on addressing tenant advocacy and housing justice issues from a Northern perspective, with an intersectional approach that focuses on supporting underserved tenant populations in navigating legal housing matters and advocating for their rights in housing systems. The tools developed will have potential national applications, contributing to broader conversations on housing rights and tenant advocacy, particularly in rural, remote and Northern communities across Canada.
This project is in partnership with the Yukon Anti-Poverty Coalition (YAPC), providing invaluable intersectional insights into the housing challenges in the Yukon, ensuring that the project remains responsive and inclusive.
BACKGROUND
Throughout this project, we will:
Conduct community-based research, guided by input from tenants and housing organizations that will support final policy recommendations and law reform efforts to address systemic housing issues;
Build a collaborative awareness campaign and advocacy strategy, focused on tenant rights and housing issues, informed by tenant and housing advocates’ expertise;
Develop tenant legal education and advocacy resources and tools that are accessible in both online and print formats.
This will equip tenants with knowledge and tools to strengthen their advocacy, reduce systemic barriers to justice, and foster long-term collaboration among housing organizations to improve housing outcomes across the Yukon.
